Introducing Field Data Packaging Analytics at TransPak

Smarter Testing, Safer Shipments

We’re excited to announce a new chapter at TransPak: Field Data Packaging Analytics. This new practice combines real-world transport measurements with laboratory testing to give our customers something priceless: confidence that their high-value products will arrive safely.

Behind this new initiative are Eric Joneson and Grant Badstubner, who bring complementary expertise in packaging engineering, instrumentation, and data analytics.

Eric, a graduate of Michigan State’s School of Packaging, spent more than 30 years at Lansmont Corporation, where he led technology, labs, and standards development. He has also served on the ISTA Global Board and IAPRI Board, working closely with universities and industry groups worldwide. What excites him most about joining TransPak is the opportunity to scale this expertise inside a company with both a global footprint and an incredible customer base.

Grant, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo graduate with a degree in Industrial Technology and a Master’s in Packaging, began his career at Lansmont Corporation in Monterey. He worked hands-on with instrumentation and data loggers, capturing field data and measuring distribution dynamics to better understand how products endure real-world conditions. Now, he specializes in turning raw measurements into actionable insights that empower labs and customers to make smarter, faster packaging decisions.

We sat down with Eric and Grant to hear more:

Q: What exactly is Field Data Packaging Analytics?

Eric: In short, it’s about capturing what really happens when products are moving in the supply chain. We will measure and characterize shock, vibration, temperature, humidity, and pressure hazards, using portable environmental recorders. We take that raw “field” data, transform it into laboratory test profiles, and use it to qualify packaging and shipping methods. The result? Lower risk of product damage and stronger assurance for our customers.

Q: Why is this important now?

Grant: High-value industries, like semiconductors, medical devices, and aerospace, can’t afford uncertainty. A damaged product doesn’t just cost millions in repairs; it disrupts entire production schedules. By basing our testing on actual shipment conditions, we’re closing the gap between theory and reality.

Q: What kinds of technology are you using?

Eric: Think of it like a black box for shipping. We use compact data loggers that can ride along on crates, containers, trucks, planes, or ships. They measure every bump, shock, and climate change along the way. That information becomes the foundation for realistic test simulations in our lab.

Q: What does the customer actually gain?

Grant: Clarity and speed. Instead of asking, “Will this packaging work?” we can show data-driven proof. Customers get faster qualification cycles, fewer surprises, and confidence that their products will survive the journey.

Q: Why did you choose TransPak?

Eric: TransPak is evolving from being “just a packaging provider” to a true solutions partner. Adding Field Data Packaging Analytics deepens that shift. It’s not just about crates and boxes anymore; it’s about measurable risk reduction.

Q: What’s next?

Eric: We’ll be partnering with our test labs and packaging engineers to bring these insights directly into customer projects.

Grant: And sharing case studies—showing how real-world analytics translate into lower costs, faster approvals, and peace of mind.
