ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) is a globally recognized set of standards and testing procedures designed to ensure the safety and protection of products during transportation. The association’s main focus is controlling transportation costs, reducing product damage during distribution, and streamlining resources with efficient packaging designs. Secure delivery of products to their destination cannot happen without proper packaging, and ISTA guidelines are essential for guaranteeing product safety in today’s global market.
ISTA Test Procedures and Projects provide guidelines for designing and testing packaging solutions to evaluate their performance. Each procedure is designed to address specific aspects of the transportation process. These series include:
1 Series: Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests
Per the official ISTA guidance, the 1 series challenges the strength and robustness of the product and package combination without simulating any environmental occurrences. The seven testing procedures of 1 series are useful as screening tests, particularly when used as a consistent benchmark over time.
2 Series: Partial Simulation Performance Tests
Per the official ISTA guidance, the 2 series tests include at least one element of 3 Series type General Simulation performance tests, such as atmospheric conditioning or mode-shaped random vibration, in addition to basic elements of a 1 Series type Non-Simulation Integrity test.
3 Series: General Simulation Performance Tests
Per the official ISTA guidance, the 3 series is designed to provide a laboratory simulation of the general damage-producing motions, forces, conditions, and sequences of transport environments. The series is applicable across broad sets of circumstances, such as varied vehicle types and routes, or differing handling exposures. Procedures of the 3 series include simple-shaped random vibration, different drop heights applied to the sample package, and/or atmospheric conditioning.
4 Series: Enhanced Simulation Performance Tests
Following the ISTA packaging standards ensures product safety, regulatory compliance, and damage prevention while saving costs associated with over-packaging and ensuring customer satisfaction.
At TransPak, our ISTA-certified facilities ensure all testing adheres to industry-recognized standards. We offer a comprehensive range of testing methods to confirm your packaging can withstand the rigors of transit and protect its contents throughout the journey.
Our Freight Testing Capabilities Include:
We assess the structural integrity and performance of your packaging under compression forces typical in warehousing, storage, and both land and sea transport conditions.
Damage from vibration during shipment is often hidden until product use. We test your packaging to ensure it can provide protection to your product during transportation and verify that your product’s critical frequencies do not align with those of the packaging in order to prevent vibration damage.
We simulate impacts caused by sudden shifting during transport, handling by forklifts, or movement at loading docks to ensure your product remains safe under stress.
Using our environmental chamber, we test your packaging against humidity and temperature fluctuations to ensure consistent protection across all conditions.
We replicate realistic drop scenarios, including flat, edge, and corner drops, to evaluate how well your packaging protects the product if it's dropped during distribution, whether in a warehouse or during transit.
In addition to rigorous testing, we design and build ISTA-compliant packaging solutions tailored to your industry’s needs and validated by real-world field data. With fast turnaround times, TransPak is ready to support your pre-shipment testing or product launch timelines.
